It was a very smart move by Atlantic producer George Avakian to release the recording of the Charles Lloyd Quartet in Monterey under the title "Forest Flower". The hippie flower power movement of the late '60s, actually devoted to a different musical genre, was totally into this music. The four musicians filled the visitors' chairs, benches and standing room at the festivals in Newport, between Molde / Norway and Antibes / France and those of the Fillmore East and West. And also Monterey, 120 km south of San Francisco, the capital of the hippies, presented the supergroup on September 18, 1966.

On the LP you can find the almost 18 minutes long title track and the standard "East Of The Sun", recorded during the festival. The LP is supplemented by a composition by Keith Jarrett and one by Cecil McBee, recorded in the studio ten days before the festival.

What remains outstanding is the intense interplay, the energy, palpable in every second, the perfect harmony even with every change of musical mood, the intensity. Even after 50 years it is audible and tangible that Charles Lloyd has taken up the cause of breaking down the musical barriers between pop and jazz.

Charles Lloyd is still committed to this goal today, all four musicians are still active - even if they are no longer together on the festival stages. Only this remastered LP is available for this high pleasure.
