Capitol Records

Capitol Records was launched in Los Angeles in 1942 by songwriter Johnny Mercer, film producer Buddy DeSylva, and record store owner Glenn Wallichs, Capitol Records was the first West Coast-based major label. The full-service entity was knee-deep in country music. California boasted more than its share of hillbilly and Western swing standouts, the label maintaining a healthy presence in Nashville as well under Ken Nelson’s A&R supervision during the ‘50s and ‘60s.
