Ricky Skaggs, Sänger und Multiinstrumentalist auf Gitarre, Mandoline und Fiddle, war einer der ersten und ist auch heute noch einer der wichtigsten jener neuen Traditionalisten, die Ende der 70er und Anfang der 80er Jahre der Country Music ihre ursprüngliche Kraft und Vitalität wieder zurückgegeben haben. Auf den Wurzeln und der Tradition aufbauend, mit ein paar zeitgemäßen Zutaten versehen, ist es Ricky Skaggs mit seiner Musik gelungen, sich Anerkennung und Erfolg in einem Business zu verschaffen, in dem viele Jahre lang nur mit einem Blick auf die Pop Hit Paraden produziert worden und damit die Musik verkommen war.

Mit seinem Erfolg hat Ricky Skaggs den Weg frei gemacht für weitere junge Künstler wie Reba McEntire, Dwight Yoakam, Steve Earle und Randy Travis, die alle zum erfolgreichen Kreis der jungen Traditionalisten zählen. Ricky Skaggs ist mit Bluegrass Music aufgewachsen und hat in verschiedenen Bands gespielt, zum Beispiel bei Ralph Stanley und später, kurz bevor er seine Solokarriere begann, in der Band von Emmylou Harris, wo er sich den letzten Schliff holte. Daneben hat er immer wieder als Sessionmusiker gewirkt und bei zahlreichen Produktionen der Country Gentlemen war er mit dabei. Zu seinen allerersten L.P.s gehört eine Duett~Produktion aus den 70er Jahren zusammen mit Keith Whitley. Verheiratet ist Ricky Skaggs mit Sharon White von der Gruppe „The Whites“.
