Joan Baez

Amerikanische Folksängerin, die sich mehr als Politikerin denn als Sängerin bezeichnet. Geboren am 9.1.1941 in Staten Island (New York). Ihr Vater war Mexikaner, die Mutter Schottin. Begann während des Studiums zu singen, trat zunächst in kleinen Clubs auf, hatte Durchbruch beim Newport Folk Festival im Sommer 1959.

1960 nahm Joan Baez die erste LP mit traditionellen Folksongs auf. 1962 sang sie das Lied „We shall overcome', das in den folgenden Jahren zu einer Hymne der studentischen Bewegung werden sollte. Joan Beaz war mit Bob Dylan befreundet, der 1963 für ihre vierte LP „Joan Beaz in Concert' auch einen längeren Text für die LP-Hülle schrieb. Gemeinsam waren Bob Dylan und Joan Baez in der Mitte der 60erJahre die Anführer der politisch-engagierten Jugendlichen.

1965 ging diese Freundschaft zu Ende. Bob Dylan schrieb den Song „Visions of Joana' über sie. Während Bob Dylan ruhiger wurde, schlug Joan Baez eine immer radikalere Richtung ein. Sie weigerte sich, Steuern zu zahlen, weil damit Kriege finanziert würden. 1968 veröffentlichte sie den biographischen Roman „Daybreak', im gleichen Jahr heiratete sie den Studentenführer David Harris. Während er 2 Jahre im Gefängnis war, entstanden die beiden LPs „David's Album' und „One Day at aTime', 1971 trennten sich die beiden wieder. Joan Baez hat ein Kind.

1971 hatte Joan Baez mit „The Night they drove old Dixie down' auch einen ihrer größten Hits. Neueste LP: „Diamonds and Rust'
