Erster Hit: Street Talk (1983) Erster Top Ten Hit: Love At The Five And Dime (1986) Erster No. 1 Hit: Goin' Gone (1988) Kathy Mattea, eine hoffnungsvolle Nachwuchssängerin der 80er Jahre, begann nach Highschool und Universität als Sängerin in der Gruppe ,Pennsboro“, einer Bluegrass Band. Dann zog es sie nach Nashville, wo sie als „Tour Guide“ in der Country Music Hall Of Fame einen Job fand. Nebenher produzierte sie Demos und trat abends in kleinen Clubs auf. Dann ging sie mit Bobby Goldsboro auf Tournee, sammelte musikalische Erfahrungen und unter- schrieb 1983 ihren ersten Plattenvertrag bei Mercury. Auch als Songwriter scheint Kathy Mattea außergewöhnliche Fähigkeiten zu besitzen. Als sie 1978 ihre Heimat West Virginia verließ, schrieb sie den Song „Leaving West Virginia“, der auf ihrer dritten L.P. aus dem Jahre 1986 zu finden ist.
