James Travis Reeves, in frühester Jugend von Jimmie Rodgers beeinflusst, besuchte die Universität, arbeitete als D.J. bei diversen Radiostationen und landete schließlich als Ansager bei der Louisiana Hayride Show in Shreveport, wo er ab und zu auch einmal vertretungsweise singen durfte. Dort wurde er von dem Schallplattenboss Fabor Robinson entdeckt und unter Vertrag genommen. Zuvor hatte er schon einmal für das Kaufhaus-Label „Macy“ zwei Singles eingespielt. Schon Jim Reeves” zweite Single für Abbott Records wurde ein No. 1 Hit, und damit hatte er es auch schon geschafft. Er wurde mitsamt seinem bisher eingespielten Material für Abbott von der RCA übernommen und zum Weltstar gemacht. Seine samtweiche Stimme eignete sich vorzüglich für jenen Pop-Country-Sound, der unter der Bezeichnung „Nashville Sound“ damals in den 50erJahren gerade in Mode kam.

Jim Reeves wurde einer der größten Stars der 50er und 60er Jahre mit unzähligen Hits, die auch zum Teil in den Pop Charts erfolgreich waren. 1955 schon war er Mitglied der Grand Ole Opry geworden. Große Tourneen führten ihn um die ganze Welt. Dann, auf dem Höhepunkt seiner glanzvollen Karriere, kam Jim Reeves bei einem Flugzeugunglück um's Leben. Die kleine Maschine war auf dem Flug von Arkansas nach Nashville an einem trüben, regnerischen Tag kurz vor der Landung in den Hügeln von Tennessee zerschellt. Jim Reeves und sein Manager konnten nur noch tot geborgen werden.
