Geboren am 9.10.1940 in Liverpool John Lennon profilierte sich neben Paul McCartney sehr bald als intelligentester Beatle, der sowohl mit Musik als auch hervorragend mit' Worten umzugehen verstand. Nachdem John Lennon es geschafft hatte, sich von den ersten Gehversuchen als Texter zu distanzieren, gelangen ihm spitzzüngige Lyrics mit Tiefgang. Daneben setzte er seine Talente auch als Buchautor (1964 „In His Own Write', 1965 „A Spaniard In The Works') und Theaterlyriker (1968 „Scene Three, Act One') ein.

Nach seiner Scheidung von seiner ersten Frau Cynthia 1969 heiratete John Lennon in einer Schau-Hochzeit die Japanerin Yoko Ono, unter deren Einfluß er mehr und mehr in den Bereich experimenteller Aktionen geriet. Ono wird gemeinhin der Bruch der Beatles zugeschrieben, die sich mit den solistischen Aktivitäten des Paares nur schwerlich befreunden konnten. Lennon investierte Großsummen in die künstlerische Karriere seiner Frau, die aber selten über infantile Ergebnisse hinausging.

1971 zog John Lennon nach New York um, betrieb von dort aus die Auflösung der gemeinsamen Firma Apple und startete auch dort seine Solo-Aktivitäten, die starke Beachtung fanden. Wegen eines Rauschgiftdeliktes schwebt Lennon, dem in jüngster Zeit eine Trennung von Yoko Ono nachgesagt wird, in ständiger Gefahr, aus den USA ausgewiesen zu werden. Der Ex-Beatle, der sichjüngst mit seinem ehemaligen Songwriter-Kollegen McCartney ausgesöhnt haben soll, arbeitete übrigens bereits wieder mit seinen Kollegen George Harrison und Ringo Starr bei mehreren Schallplattenproduktionen zusammen.
