The Kinks

Gegründet 1964 in London Die Kinks gehören - obwohl seit längerer Zeit aus den Single-Hitlisten abwesend - zu den beständigsten und wichtigsten Gruppen der englischen Rock- und Popszene. Die Kinks entwickelte unter dem leitenden Einfluß des Bandleaders und Autors Ray Davies bereits in den Anfangsjahren des Beat-Zeitalters einen eigenen Aggressivstil, der sich in den frühen Hits der Gruppe („You Really Got Me', „Louie Louie', „All Day And All Of The Night', „Tired Of Waiting For You' u.a.) anzeigte. Schließlich entwickelte sich das Quintett (neben Ray Davies sein Bruder Dave [voc + g], John Dalton [b], Mick Avory [dr] und John Gosling [Keyboards]) zu einer musikalisch ausgereiften Truppe, die mit dem sozial-satirischen Werk „Arthur“ oft mit den Who und deren Pop-„Oper' „Tommy“ verglichen wurde.

Ray Davies wandte sich nun immer sarkastischer dem Showgeschäft zu, das er in seinen folgenden Songs schärfstens kritisierte. Nach den Erfolgen der Kinks-LPs „Muswell Hillbillies' und „Everybody's in Showbiz ~ Everbody's A Star' schrieb Ray Davies das Musical „Perservation', nach dem die derzeit letzte Langspielplatte von den Kinks, „Soap Opera', aufgenommen wurde.
