When Syd Nathan founded King Records in 1943 with a couple of poorly recorded and pressed 78s by the “Sheppard Brothers” and “Bob McCarthy”, he could hardly have imagined that his little enterprise would grow into one of the most important independent record companies, nor that behind these pseudonyms hid the future Hall-of-Fame members Louis Marshall “Grandpa” Jones and the guitar giant Merle Travis (who posed solo as “McCarthy”). This cross-section of Grandpa's best early King recordings - many of which also feature his Kentucky buddy, Merle - makes up STEPPIN' OUT KIND, the latest in our series of CDs mastered directly from transfers of the original King acetates.

geb. 20. 10. 1913 in Niagara/ Kentucky Record Labels: King, RCA, Decca, Vocalion, Monument, CMH Erster Hit: The All American Boy (1959) Erster Top Ten Hit: T For Texas (1962) Louis Marshall Jones, genannt „Grandpa Jones“, gehört noch heute zu den farbigsten Gestalten der Country Music. Mit 16 Jahren schon gewann er einen Talentwettbewerb, arbeitete 1935 mit Bradley Kincaid und schlüpfte bereits in jungen Jahren in die Großvater-Figur, die er noch heute, als ,echter Opa“ darstellt. Damals klebte er sich einen Bart an, malte sich Falten ins Gesicht und kleidete sich altmodisch. Heute sind Bart und Falten echt und er vertritt noch immer, als einer der ganz wenigen Country Künstler, die Old-Time-Music und spielt das Banjo in der alten Claw-Hammer-Manier eines Uncle Dave Macon. 1937 gründete Grandpa Jones seine erste eigene Band ,Grandpa Jones And His Grandchildren“ und wurde Mitglied beim WWVA Jamboree in Wheeling. Ende 1943 spielte er seine erste Single für King Records ein und arbeitete eng mit Merle Travis zusammen. 1944 musste Grandpa Jones zum Militär und kam als Militärpolizist nach Deutschland, genauer nach München, wo er einige Zeit über AFN sein eigenes „Munich Mountaineer Program“ hatte. 1946 ging Grandpa Jones zurück in die USA und wurde Mitglied der Grand Ole Opry. Als Vertreter der Old-Time-Music tat sich Jones in der Hit Parade natürlich schwer, doch hat er für die diversen Plattenfirmen bei denen er unter Vertrag stand, immer wieder wunderschöne L.P.s eingespielt. Mitglied in der Grandpa Jones Band sind nicht nur die inzwischen erwachsenen Kinder, sondern auch die singende und fiedelnde Ehefrau Ramona Jones. Grandpa Jones ist seit 1978 in der Country Music Hall Of Fame vertreten
