Jack & Leslie
Jack Hilliard and Leslie Palmer were both born in Georgia around 1907–11 and spent their early youth in Augusta, but did not meet until they were in their teens or early twenties. Hilliard already played guitar and Palmer mandolin, and they began performing at local functions, moving on to theatre work and radio. They were regularly heard in the 1930s and '40s on WRDW, Augusta, Palmer now using an electric steel guitar, and continued to play together until the late '50s, when Palmer suffered a stroke. He is believed to have died in the '60s or '70s, and Hilliard some time later. (Tony Russell)
Jack & Leslie's one and only recording session consisted of a curious mixture of sacred hymns and ribald blues, plus this version of Jimmie Rodgers' nostalgic tribute to the muddy Mississippi.
