Jess Hillard

Jess S. Hillard (1895-1967) was a native of Indiana who spent most of his life in or around Richmond. Although he gave his occupation in 1930 as that of a fireman, he spent so much time over the next three years in the local studio of Gennett Records that he may have been employed by them; if so, it was largely to make copies of recent records by artists who, like him, sang, yodelled and played bluesy guitar. Blue Yodel No. 10 is one of half a dozen Rodgers songs he covered.
