The Professor is Back

Joshua Hedley, born and raised in Naples, Florida, is a country music singer-songwriter, fiddler and guitarist. He's also a singing professor of country & western, as he explains on his raucous and witty new album, Neon Blue.

And indeed, there is some truth to it: Hedley has devoted his entire life to the study of this genre. Ask him about it, and he explains, "When all my friends went to college, I went to Nashville. I was 19 years old, playing in honkytonks and getting an education."

His debut, Mr. Jukebox, released in 2018 on Third Man Records, the lair of White Stripes boss Jack White, shows a vast knowledge of country history, particularly the beery ballads of the 1950s and '60s. His idols were George Jones, Ray Price and Glen Campbell, but his most notable achievement was putting his own stamp on their style.

Neon Blue picks up four years later, but is dedicated to a different era: the last bastion of country music was the early 1990s, roughly between 1989 and 1996. You could turn on the radio and immediately know you were listening to a country song. You could still hear steel guitar and fiddle. But around 1996/97, there was a hard fork in the road when country drifted into pop. Neon Blue asks, What if that fork had never happened? What if country continued to sound like country?" the professor says. It would probably sound like the title track, which was released as a single back in February.

Neon Blue was recorded by Justin Francis at Ronnie's Place in Nashville. Production was handled by Jordan Lehning and Skylar Wilson, mixing was done by Kyle Lehning at The Compound, Nashville, and mastering was done by Casey Wood.

Als versierter Geigenspieler fühlte sich Hedley als Kind unerklärlicherweise zum Instrument hingezogen. Mit 8 Jahren bekam er seine eigene Geige und mit 12 Jahren spielte er bei der VFW mit Pflückern mittleren Alters. Mit 19 Jahren zog er von seiner Heimat Florida nach Nashville, wo er ein gefragter Sideman in Roberts Western World und anderen Bars und schließlich ein angesehener Frontmann wurde. Bewaffnet mit einem leichten Gesang und erstaunlichem Geigenspiel wurde er als Bürgermeister von Lower Broad bekannt. Er machte sich auf den Weg, um mit Künstlern wie Jonny Fritz, Justin Townes Earle und anderen aufzutreten, während der Dokumentarfilm Heartworn Highways Revisited im Jahr 2015 Hedley prominent präsentierte.

Hedley begann erst im Alter von 28 Jahren seine eigenen Songs zu schreiben. So begann er im Backend seiner 20er Jahre endlich zu schreiben, um schließlich eine Flut von Klarheit und Kreativität freizusetzen. Das herzzerreißende, destillierte, trotzig klassische Land, das aus ihm herausgoss, wurde Mr. Jukebox, eine Salbe und ein Leuchtfeuer für alle 60er Jahre Honky-Tonk-Anhänger.

Der Albumöffner "Counting All My Tears" holt aus dem Sprung das herrlich weinerliche Terrain der Sammlung heraus. Als "oooooooohhhhs" und "aaaaahhhs" dienen als prickelnde Harmonien - ein klassisches Country-Blümchen, das durch Mr. Jukebox getragen wird - wird das einsame Klavier durch eine vertraute Besetzung mit Stahl und natürlich Geige ergänzt. "Mr. Jukebox" ist ein swingendes Nicken zu diesen geliebten Maschinen - sowohl leblos als auch atmend -, die zuverlässig viele Songs für wenig Geld spielen. Es ist unmöglich, die Melodie zu hören und nicht zu lächeln, wenn man an Hedleys eingeloggte Coverbands in Nashville's Lower Broad denkt. Üppige Saiten geben dem schlendernden "Weird Thought Thinker" den Anstoß, der mit Harmonien aufwartet, die sowohl an Basswalkdowns als auch an Engel erinnern. Ein Ace Fiddle Intro eröffnet "Let Them Talk", eine unbeschwerte Ode an die Liebe und nicht an den, der sie kennt. "Let's Take a Vacation" plädiert für eine letzte Flucht der Liebenden, um zu versuchen, sich zu erinnern, was verloren gegangen ist. Hedley liefert eine meisterhafte Rezitation über weinenden Stahl, weiche Harmonien und reichhaltige Streicher. Er schrieb "These Walls" über FooBar, einen geliebten Ost-Nashville-Tauchgang, in dessen Nähe Hedley lebte, bevor er geschlossen wurde.
