After penning Glen Campbell's mega-hit "Gentle on My Mind" and appearing repeatedly on Glen's weekly variety show and the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, John Hartford could have taken the show business glide path to financial security and ease.
Instead, the moved the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist (and steamboat enthusiast) from L.A. back to Nashville, signed a deal with Warner Bros. and created one of the most influential and groundbreaking albums not only in bluegrass, but in all of modern country music.

1971's Aereo-Plain assembled a veritable supergroup consisting of fiddler Vassar Clements, dobro player Tut Taylor, guitarist Norman Blake and bassist Randy Scruggs to play a set of mostly original tunes that set it apart from anything the die-hard bluegrass community had ever heard before.

Fresh, irreverent, funny and always - with the exception of the hilarious Dr. Demento favorite Boogie - atmospheric, and played by a band, the songs on Aereo-Plain pointed in a new stylistic direction for bluegrass a new stylistic direction for bluegrass that was quickly dubbed "newgrass"; as Sam Bush of the New Grass Revival says, "Without Aereo-Plain, there would be no 'newgrass' music" We are re-releasing this important album on LP for the first time in 50 years, with lyrics and liner notes by John Hartford expert Skip Heller.
