Tommy Doss

born 26. 9. 1920 in Weiser - ldaho Record Labels: Crystal, Bear Family The singer Tommy Doss started to interpret the well-known songs of the Sons Of The Pioneers together with his brother and a friend in the late 1930s. In 1947, by a lucky coincidence, he had the chance to join Bob Wi1ls' Texas Playboys as a replacement for Tommy Duncan. He toured with Bob Wills for a few months and then joined Luke Wills' Rhythm Busters and during a recording session at RCA the producer was astonished to discover that Tommy Doss sounds almost exactly like Bob Nolan from Sons Of the Pioneers.

In 1948 Tommy Doss found himself with the Ole Ras- mussen Band until Tim Spencer called him in mid-1949 and offered to replace Bob Nolan in the Sons Of The Pioneers. A childhood dream of Tommy Doss came true. Exactly on July 15, 1949 Tommy Doss joined the Sons Of The Pioneers in Helena - Montana and stayed with the group until the end of 1963. since Bob Nolan was still present at numerous recording sessions after 1949, it is still difficult for the listener to say whether Bob Nolan or Tommy Doss sings along when listening to some records. The voices were just too similar. With the Rasmussen Band Tommy Doss recorded some recordings for the label Crystal in the late 1940s. In May 1972 he recorded eleven songs for a planned L.P.s, but only 15 years later, in May 1987, the production was released on Bear Family.

They were replaced by former Columbia singing cowboy Ken Curtis and young Tommy Doss, a veteran of Bob Wills' band who sounded remarkably like Nolan, ensuring a continuity of sound. Brady left again in 1949 to join Roy Rogers, replaced once again by Shug Fisher, then Curtis left in 1953, replaced by Dale Warren, a veteran of Foy Willing and the Riders of the Purple Sage, who remained with the group until his death in 2008, an amazing 55 years. This version of the Pioneers made a number of superb records for RCA, and a number of excellent radio transcriptions for the US Forest Service, but there was more upheaval to come: Hugh Farr left, bitterly and in litigation, in 1958, and Karl Farr died suddenly in 1961.
