The string dancer Al di Meola, who had already transformed his initially over-motivated finger art into more musical substance on “Elegant Gypsy”, continues on the path of more concentrated work with the material on the follow-up album “Casino”. For example, “Egyptian Danza”, a complex of melodies that revolve around each other and describe the field of tension between the Orient, Occident and the New World with a slight electronic charge. In terms of sound, “Chasin' The Voodoo” transforms into a very dense continuous fire, pervaded by the clear and familiar string sound of the master, who realizes the idea of rhythms and multiple voices in personal union with himself: Meola accompanies himself by means of multitracking in the “Fantasia Suite For Two Guitars”, four miniatures with the crashing zapateado and glittering flamenco inherent in them. After so many good things, the best is saved for last: In the long title track “Casino”, the combined forces come together in a grand interplay of changing tempos, overlapping patterns, metrical tricks and, of course, supreme guitar artistry.
