Art Blakey gilt als einer der Begründer des modernen Bebop-Stils am Schlagzeug. Bekannt als kraftvoller Musiker und mitreißender Groove-Meister, hatte und hat sein bluesiger, funkiger Hard Bop nach wie vor einen tiefgreifenden Einfluss auf den Mainstream-Jazz. Über 30 Jahre lang gehörten zu seiner Band »Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers « viele junge Musiker, die später zu prominenten Namen im Jazz wurden.

Das Ende der 1950er Jahre erschienene Album »A Night In Tunisia« ist ein Meilenstein des Jazz und ein Paradebeispiel für Blakeys außergewöhnliches rhythmisches Können. Bei diesem Album dreht sich jedoch nicht alles um das Schlagzeugspiel; es lässt viel Raum für großartiges melodisches Zusammenspiel der Mitmusiker Sam Dockery am Klavier, John Griffin und Ferris Benda am Saxophon, Bill Hardman an der Trompete und Jimmy De Brest am Kontrabass.
