Kurt Demmler

Kurt Demmler (actually Kurt Abramowitsch), born 1943 in Posen, grew up in Klingenthal, studied medicine 1963-1969 at the Karl-Marx-University Leipzig and worked as a general practitioner until 1976.
As a student he sang in the church choir, with big band and symphonic orchestra and founded his first song club. Around 1965 he began to write songs and perform them at medical balls and folk festivals. They found resonance not only with the students, but also with university management and state security. After threats of exmatriculation and imprisonment, Demmler agreed to perform only within the university framework and with censored songs. An editor of the youth channel DT 64, who had heard him at a regional chanson competition, ignored this, brought him to Berlin and brought him together with the Hootenanny/Oktoberklub. The socialist commitment and the spirit of optimism of the young singing movement swept him along and inspired him to some political and agitational songs. "but he was never ashamed of them, but simply sang them no more when they no longer voted for him (regrettable is only that they could still be used for their purposes by the 'higher' side for a long time). (Demmler).
Because of personal and political differences, Demmler was expelled from the October Club at the end of 1967. He set up a singing studio at the Karl-Marx-University Leipzig and started working with musicians who were banned as Butlers in 1965 and later became famous as Klaus Renft Combo. Kurt Demmler toured the GDR with solo programs and sang on several records. Above all, however, he became a lyricist for numerous bands and rock and pop interpreters. he became "one of the founders of the ostrocks, which was characterized by a lyrically coded text language, the only possibility to say things there that actually should not have been said. so the audience also became interpreters, but unfortunately also the responsible functionaries pointed diligently at it. and both sides exaggerated occasionally and understood things that the authors hadn't thought of yet. an eternal enigma game, coding and decoding" (Demmler).
