The terrific 1967 post-bop album "Miles Smiles" was recorded with the second of the great quintets under the auspices of Miles Davis. It features saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams.

The album exemplifies Davis' willingness to experiment with less strict structures, tempos and measures. Although it did not follow the conventions of bop, it was not yet free jazz.

"Miles Smiles" was praised by critics for its original compositions, the chemistry of the quintet, and Davis' "phrasing." The album received the rating "Essential! One of the Quintet's best albums!" and "Footprints" and "Dolores" were praised as "some of the best jazz compositions of all time."

Davis, der 1957 einen ersten Hit mit dem Soundtrack des Films „Fahrstuhl zum Schaffott' schrieb, wandte sich immer stärker einem psychedelischen Trompetenjazz zu. Seit seiner Mitgliedschaft im Charlie-Parker-Quintett nach 1945 gilt er als die Verkörperung von Kühle und Unnahbarkeit. Der unberechenbare, egonzentrische Musiker wurde von seinen Mitspielern oft als derart autoritär empfunden, daß ihn die meisten nach kurzer Zeit wieder verließen.
