Geboren am 8.12.1925 in New York Sammy Davis Junior zählt zur elitären Gilde amerikanischer Entertainer. Er tanzt. Er singt. Er schauspielert. Er ist weder der größte Sänger, noch der beste Tänzer oder gar der versierteste Schauspieler. Einzeln diese Gattungen beobachtet, gibt es bessere. Aber Sammy Davis Junior konsolidiert diese Bestandteile zu einer Einheit- und damit zieht er in die Spitzencrew des weltweiten Show-Biz ein.

Erster Glanzpunkt seiner professionellen Karriere war, als Sammy Davis Junoir Mitte der 50er Jahre auf dem New Yorker Broadway auftrat. ln Musicals wie George Gershwins „Porgy and Bess' faszinierte er gleichsam über Nacht die Kritiker der New Yorker Blätter. Dieser Erfolg wiederholte sich mit unverminderter Vehemenz 1965 in dem Broadway-Musical „Golden Boy'.

Sammy Davis Junior wurde zu einem der gefragtesten Stars Amerikas. Seine zahllosen Schallplatten und exklusiven Nachtklub-Entertainments aber gaben Sammy Davis Junior nicht nur den Namen eines großen Showstars. Seine Biographie „Yes, I can', die 1965 zu einer eben vielgelobten wie vielgerügten Publikation gedieh, zeigt die Anstrengung, mit der Sammy Davis Junior den Widrigkeiten die Zähne zeigt.
