While many teenagers are only now discovering rockabilly as something new, fresh and exciting, a true relief from the over-arranged computerised stuff on the radio, rockabilly goes back almost thirty years when black rhythm and blues mixed with white hillbilly music to form rock'n'roll.

It was in 1953 when young Wesley Erwin Curtis Jr. heard his first rock song: a tune called Rock Me by the bluesman Piano Red. A bit later at the "Big D Jamboree" Curtis saw a new singer named Elvis Presley, When he tried to buy Elvis' That's Alright Mama, the record shop only had the version by Marty Robbins which sure didn't have the same kick to it. Only later was Wesley able to buy the good version on the massive 78 r.p.m. yellow SUN label out of the juke-box of a soda-shop for...a nickel! That disc is now worth hundreds of dollars! A quarter of a century later, rockabilly is again (Justly so) the rage with the kids and Big Mac is the: Top Cat on the Rockabilly Track!

Wesley Erwin 'Mac' Curtis, Jr. (16. Januar 1939 - 16. September 2013) war ein amerikanischer Rockabilly-Musiker.Geboren in Fort Worth, Texas, begann Curtis im Alter von 12 Jahren Gitarre zu spielen und nahm an lokalen Talentwettbewerben teil. 1954 zog seine Familie nach Weatherford, Texas, während er dort eine Band mit zwei Klassenkameraden gründete, Jim und Ken Galbraith. Sie spielten auf Schulveranstaltungen, aber während einer der Veranstaltungen wurde ihre Show wegen sexuell anregender Bewegungen auf der Bühne eingestellt. Stattdessen spielte die Gruppe lokal, und 1955 wurde ihnen ein Deal mit King Records angeboten, die ihre Debüt-Single 'If I Had Me A Woman' veröffentlichten.

Alan Freed und Sixties Country

Bald darauf hörte Alan Freed die Gruppe und lud sie ein, in seinem Weihnachtsradio-Special 1956 zu spielen. Curtis kehrte 1957 nach Weatherford zurück, um die Schule zu beenden, und wurde dann nach seinem Eintritt in das Militär ein Discjockey in Seoul, Korea. Nach seiner Rückkehr 1960 setzte er seine Arbeit als DJ im Süden fort und veröffentlichte einige Alben; seine Veröffentlichung von 1968, 'The Sunshine Man', erschien auf Platz 35 der U.S. Country-Alben-Charts.

Rockabilly - Rollin' Rock Records

Als Rockabilly in den 70er Jahren immer beliebter wurde, begann er mit Ray Campi aufzunehmen und unterschrieb bei Ronnie Weiser's Rollin' Rock Records. 1970 hatte Mac Curtis mit 'Early In The Morning' (#35) und 'Honey, Don't' (#43) zwei Hits auf der Billboard Hot Country Songs-Chart. Als Sänger war er noch in den 1980er und 1990er Jahren aktiv. Später wurde er in die Rockabilly Hall of Fame aufgenommen.

Er starb am 16. September 2013 im Alter von 74 Jahren, nachdem er einen Monat zuvor bei einem Autounfall verletzt worden war und sich danach in einem Pflegeheim rehabilitiert hatte.
