Rodney Crowell's new album takes its title from a seemingly mundane stretch of four-lane asphalt road that leads deep into Louisiana. It's the road he and producer Tyler Bryant drove to reach the remote studio where they recorded these songs. They hauled a truckload of equipment on a two-day journey that ended in swamps. Along the way, Crowell searched for the route they were driving: Airline Highway. It's the southernmost section of Highway 61, also known as the Blues Highway or Great River Road, and it follows the Mississippi from Minnesota down to New Orleans. Crowell knows this part of the country well. He grew up east of Houston, just a few hours west of the state line, and as a young man he made wild forays into Louisiana to drink, party, and mainly to experience live music.
Airline Highway is an album full of old, lasting loves – whether it's a favorite song or a lover you fondly remember. Songs like “Sometime Thang” and “Rainy Days in California” (the latter featuring Lukas Nelson) toast old romances and encounters with various women in California or Louisiana: falling in love, weathering tough times, growing apart until they become “that quiet voice on your phone,” to quote a devastating line from “Taking Flight,” which he co-wrote with Ashley McBryde, with whom he also performs. Some of them are fictional, Crowell explains, but they all contain a grain of truth.

geb. 7. 8. 1950 in Houston - Texas Record Labels: Warner Brothers, Columbia Erster Hit: Elvira (1978) Rodney Crowell, ein Sänger, Gitarrist, Schlagzeuger und Komponist mit einer gleich starken Neigung zur Rock- und Country-Music, kam Anfang der 70er Jahre nach Nashville, wo Jerry Reed auf ihn aufmerksam wurde und ein paar seiner Kompositionen auf Schallplatten einspielte. Wenig später wurde der Produzent Brian Ahern mit Rodney Crowell bekannt und stellte ihn Emmylou Harris vor. Und auf vielen Harris-L.P.s fand man von nun an Songs aus der Feder von Rodney Crowell, darunter ,Amarillo,'Till I Gain Control Again,You're Supposed To Be Feeling Good, Tulsa Queen und viele andere. Auch die Oak Ridge Boys waren mit Rodney Crowell`s Material erfolgreich, zum Beispiel mit ,Leaving Louisiana In The Broad Daylight. Crowell wurde als Gitarrist Mitglied von Emmylou Harris von 1975 bis 1977. Dann verfolgte er seine eigene Karriere als Sänger. Doch außer einer Handvoll L.P.s und ein paar kleiner Hits, ist bislang wenig daraus geworden. Als Produzent der L.P.s seines Freundes Guy Clark und seiner Ehefrau Rosanne Cash ist Rodney Crowell dagegen umso erfolgreicher. Vielleicht sollte er tatsächlich seine Stärken erkennen und sich ganz auf das Komponieren und Produzieren konzentrieren.
