Who was/is Cray, Jackie ? - CDs, Vinyl LPs, DVD and more

The initial run of Mercury-affiliated Limelight Records (headquartered at 216 N. Wabash, around the corner from the parent label at 35 E. Wacker) consisted of a half-dozen 45s in 1958. Jackie Cray’s only release was sandwiched between a pair by a white doo-wop group, The Chimes. Cray’s real surname was LaCroy; he cut his single in Nashville in January of ’58 with the A-Team—lead guitarist Hank Garland, Chet Atkins on rhythm axe, pianist Floyd Cramer, bassist Roy ‘Junior’ Huskey--in searing support. The swaggering I Want You Baby was twinned with a rocker, Maybelle, boasting a torrid Garland solo. Cray, who wrote both sides, was never heard from again, but Limelight was—Mercury reactivated the logo in 1963.
