Keyboardist/composer Doug Carn was the biggest star of the legendary Black Jazz Records label and has released four albums (all reissued by us on Real Gone Music). He continues to be a touchstone for spiritual jazz fans and musicians alike. But very, very few people have heard his debut album, which he recorded in 1969 for the venerable Savoy label. In fact, it's so rare that we couldn't even find a copy to use for the artwork. So with Doug's help, we commissioned his daughter Eroniffa Ibrahim to create illustrations for our reissue based on the original cover photos. But do you know what we found? That's right... the original master tapes! So not only is this the Doug Carn Trio's first LP reissue, it's also an all-analog edition, pressed at Gotta Groove Records using the company's proprietary GrooveCoated stampers to minimize high-frequency loss on each subsequent pressing. We've also included an insert with liner notes from Aaron Cohen, based on an exclusive interview with the man himself. As for the music, it's a tight organ trio set that gets going right from the start with a grooving cover of Gus Cannon's “Walk Right In,” a folk hit by The Rooftop Singers. Carn's fluid, forward-thinking playing anticipates Larry Young's future forays on the keys, and originals like “Butter from the Duck” and “Yna Yna's Delight” hint at the compositional skills he flashed on the Black Jazz releases (note: that's Don Hales on guitar, not Gary Starling as credited on the original record). The opening salvo of a dazzling career, finally available again!
