Campbell war ein Country-Humorist der alten Schule, aber auch ein Interpret ernsthafter Stories und Songs. Er begann seine Karriere 1949 bei WNOX in Knoxville, kam 1958 zur Grand Ole Opry und sang ein paar erfolgreiche Duette mit Lorene Mann. Viele Jahre wirkte er bei der Hee-Haw Show mit.
