'This is Charles Bukowski. Let me just sit here and drink beer.' So begins the September 14, 1972 poetry reading from which this 1980 release on John Fahey's Takoma label is taken. This is quintessential Bukowski, from the crude drawing that graces the title page to the burps that punctuate the poems. As for the work itself, it is not what is commonly thought of as poetry, but rather observations and vignettes from the underbelly of life, dealing with perversions, poverty, drunkenness, gambling, and bodily functions. But Bukowski's bemused manner and self-deprecating humor soften the shock value of the words and emphasize the universality of the themes.
