Don Bryant

Am bekanntesten als Staff-Songwriter unter Willie Mitchell bei Hi Records und als Ehemann von Hi-Star Ann Peebles war Don Bryant auch ein feiner, unterschätzter Sänger. Bryant wurde am 4. April 1942 in Memphis geboren; sein Vater, Edward, sang mit einer Gospelgruppe namens Four Stars of Harmony, und Bryant selbst begann mit fünf Jahren in der Kirche zu singen. Im Jahre 1955 gründeten er und vier Brüder ihre eigene Gospelgruppe, die Five Bryant Brothers, die bald zu Doo Wop unter dem Namen The Quails wechselten.

Nicht lange danach schloss sich Bryant mehreren High School Freunden in einer anderen Doo Wop Gruppe an, den Four Canes, die nach ihrem Manager, dem lokalen DJ D. Cane Cole, benannt wurden. Als sich die Gruppe von Cole trennte, änderte Bryant ihren Namen in Four Kings, und sie erregten die Aufmerksamkeit des Trompeters und Bandleaders Willie Mitchell, der mit ihnen in der Memphis Clubszene auftrat. Durch Mitchell bekam Bryant seine Originalkomposition "Is There Someone Else on Your Mind" von den 5 Royalesand aufgenommen und machte 1964 seine erste Soloaufnahme mit einem Cover von Chris Kenners "I Like It Like That".

In den nächsten fünf Jahren nahm Bryant mehrere Duette mit Marion Brittnam und zahlreiche Cover-Songs auf, von denen letztere seine erste abendfüllende LP Precious Soul von 1969 (erschienen bei Hi) darstellten. Seine Karriere hinter den Kulissen wurde jedoch bald lukrativer, insbesondere als Mitchell ihn mit der neuen Hi-Signierin Ann Peebles beauftragte. Nicht mehr im Mittelpunkt des Labels, widerstand Bryant zunächst, entdeckte aber schnell eine kreative und persönliche Chemie mit Peebles, die sich 1972 und zwei Jahre später zu einer Beziehung entwickelte. In der Zwischenzeit schrieb Bryant eine Reihe von Peebles' Songs, darunter "I Can't Stand the Rain" und "99 Pounds"; sein Erfolg führte zu einer Position als Songwriter, wo er Material für andere Hi-Stars wie Al Green, Syl Johnson, O.V. Wright und Otis Clay schrieb.

Notgedrungen ist seine eigene Aufnahmekarriere in den 70er Jahren. Als Hi's Blütezeit endete, nahmen Bryant und Peebles beide eine Pause von der Musikindustrie ein; Bryant kehrte 1986 kurz zurück, um ein selbstveröffentlichtes Gospel-Album aufzunehmen, What Do You Think About Jesus. Als Peebles in den 90er Jahren zur Aufnahme zurückkehrte, assistierte Bryant wieder mit Songwriting und musikalischer Unterstützung. Im Jahr 2000 nahm er ein weiteres Gospel-Album auf, It's All in the Word.
