Geboren Napoleon Brown Goodson Culp in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA.
Brown begann seine Karriere als Gospelsänger, wechselte aber zu R&B, als ein Auftritt in Newark, New Jersey, 1954 zu einem Plattenvertrag mit Savoy Records führte.

Als tiefstimmiger, sehr individueller R&B-Sänger hatte er in den 50er Jahren eine Reihe von Hits, darunter "Don't be Angry" (1955), den Rose Marie McCoy/Charlie Singleton-Song "Piddley Patter Patter Patter". "It Don't Hurt No More" (1958) und "I cried Like A Baby" (1959). Er machte auch die Originalversion von "The Right Time", einem 1958er Hit für Ray Charles, als "(night time is) The right Time".

Eine Gefängnisstrafe hielt Brown für einen Großteil der 60er Jahre inaktiv. Er kehrte 1969 mit einem Album für Elephant V zur Musik zurück und nahm in den 70er Jahren mit The Bell Jubilee Singers für Jewel und als Bruder Napoleon Brown für Savoyen Gospelmusik auf, obwohl er die Kraft seines Werkes der 50er Jahre nie wirklich zurückeroberte.
