DEAN BEARD
wurde am 31. August 1935 in Santa Anna, Texas geboren und wuchs in Coleman auf, wo sein Vater als Großhändler tätig war. Im März 1956 spielte er bei Sun vor und schnitt zwei Sessions, sah aber nie eine Veröffentlichung.
Die Tatsache, dass er Sam Phillips' Freundin-Sekretärin nach einem Date gefragt hat, hat wahrscheinlich wenig dazu beigetragen, seine Chancen zu verbessern. Rakin' And Scrapin' wurde von Dean mit dem erfahrenen Country-Songwriter/Entrepreneur Slim Willet (der Autor von Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes) und Ray Doggett ('Elmer Ray' im Abspann) geschrieben. Die Musiker waren James Steward an der Gitarre, Jimmy Seals am Saxophon, Johnny Black am Bass und Drummer Johnny Bernero.
Es war Willet, der später Dean bei Atlantic Records (wo Rakin' es schließlich auf eine Single geschafft hat) und bei den Champs platzierte. Beard wurde als Chaperon für Seals and Croft in die Champs gebracht und schnitt anschließend acht Singles für das Champs-Label Challenge. Ein unveröffentlichter Challenge-Schnitt, Shiverin' And Shakin', setzte das Thema Rakin' And Scrapin' fort.
Beard starb in Coleman am 4. April 1989 nach einer langen lähmenden Krankheit.
