With an international cast and a superbly exciting story, The Key, writ-ten and produced by Carl Foreman, is a striking study of the psychology of fear. Set against the panorama of World War II, the film details the ex-ploits of men who sailed rescue tugs to assist other ships hit by enemy gun fire. In the starring roles are William Holden (who won the Academy Award for another film set during the some period, Stalag 17), and the exciting Sophia Loren, along with Trevor Howard, one of England's finest actors. Others in the cast are Oscar Homolka and Carl Mohner. Sir Carol Reed is the director. Rased on a novel by Jan de Hartog, the film was shot in England, at the Port-land Naval Dockyards and-for action sequences-in the English Channel, to insure authenticity. In addition to its distinguished actors, The Key has in Sir Carol Reed a director who was re-sponsible for The Third Man, The Palin .

The music for The Key, which dra-matically underscores its turbulent action and tender romance, was com-posed by Malcolm Arnold, one of Eng-land's best-known composers. Amonp, his other works are the ballet Nom-mage to the Queen and several sym-phonies and overtures, as well as many exciting screen scores, among them those for The Bridge on the River Ks ai (which won an Academy Award) and Trapeze (both available on Colum-bia Records) and Island in the Sun. In The Key, as in his other compo-sitions, Mr. Arnold has splendidly emphasized the emotions and atmos-pheres of the film with imagination and feeling. His music is conducted in this sound track recording by Muir Mathieson.
