Nat Shilkret and the Victor Orchestra

As Victor's most prolific recording artist and most prominent conductor and arranger, Nathaniel Shilkret (1895-1982) was probably the first executive to look past Rodgers' appeal to hillbilly audiences to see the potential his music had in other genres. Shilkret's dance band version of Rodgers' most popular work, Blue Yodel No. 1 is a remarkable piece of work, turning the singer's simple blues with a yodel refrain into a highly danceable arrangement eminently suitable to be performed by any urban orchestra. Under the direction of Leonard Joy, the Victor Orchestra's 1928 recording of the song is as accomplished as any made by Paul Whiteman or Jean Goldkette, Victor's reigning dance band kings.
