Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records continue their ongoing celebration of Johnny Mathis' legendary catalogue with a new, expanded two-for-one CD - and it's even fuller with characteristic Mathis songs than usual! 1976's I Only Have Eyes for You and 1977's Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me have reunited Mathis with a pair of his favorite collaborators, producer Jack Gold and arranger Gene Page, to make silky renditions of the pop leaps of the day that only Mathis could deliver.

Page brought the same style of lush orchestration he perfected with Barry White to these sets with songs by the best songwriters of the day, including Neil Sedaka ("The Hungry Years"), Alan O'Day ("Do Me Wrong"), But do me"), Stephen Sondheim ("Send in the Clowns"), Marvin Hamlisch ("One"), and the team of Michael Masserand Gerry Goffin ("Do You Know Where You're Going To", "I Always Knew I Had Itin Me"). I Only Have Eyes for You introduced the long-time concert favourite of the artist "Yellow Roses on Her Gown" and the perennial Christmas season "When a Child Is Born" as well as the celebrated singer-songwriter Harriet Schock's "Ooh, What We Do". Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me found Mathis, who salute his Columbia Records label colleague Barbra Streisand with the romantic "Evergreen", breathed new life into the vintage standard "All the Things You Are" and gave the Annie anthem "Tomorrow" a stylish touch. Two outtakes, "Experience" and Stevie Wonder's captivating "If It'sMagic", complete the luxury package. Mike Piacentini at Sony's Battery Studios remastered both albums, and Joe Marchese at The Second Disc's wrote new liner notes based on fresh interviews with Harriet Schock and of course Johnny Mathis.

Geboren 1937 in San Francisco Beinahe hätte der Ex-Sportlehrer seine Talente als Athlet beweisen müssen, denn 1956 sollte er an den Qualifikationskämpfen für die Olympischen Spiele teilnehmen. Dazwischen kam eine Kleinigkeit - ein Auftritt Johnny Mathis' im „440 Club' in San Francisco, bei dem zufällig ein Talentsucher der CBS anwesend war. Er sang, und der Talentsucher honorierte mit einem Vertrag, der Johnny Mathis zu einem Superstar machte.

Seither setzte Mathis Maßstäbe im Showgeschäft: Bisher veröffentlichte Johnny 50 Alben. Er ist der einzige amerikanische Sänger, dem es gelang, gleichzeitig 4 Langspielplatten in der US-Bestsellerliste zu haben. Seine LP „Johnny Mathis Greatest Hits' hielt sich über den Zeitraum von 8 Jahren in den amerikanischen Top 100. So ist es kein Wunder, wenn sich in Mathis' Ranch bei Santa Barbara in Kalifornien die Goldenen Schallplatten im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes stapeln.
