Back when Hardy was a young songwriter with a new publishing contract, Michael Hardy hung out at the Nashville drinking establishment Tin Roof with his father and a friend. He only had a few dollars in his account, so for six dollars he bought a big breeder's right and cultivated it as slowly as possible. On the other side of the room he saw a pretty young woman looking at her phone and looking around for someone. Hardy came up to her and asked her to sit with them until her friend arrived. To his surprise she accepted. He went to buy her a beer.

"At that time I knew that I only had about four dollars in my bank account," Hardy recalled the encounter. "But she didn't know that - she had no idea."

This sounds like the setting for a romantic comedy - the bankrupt, unlucky guy wins the beautiful woman just by his wits and they finally live happily ever after. On Hardy's forthcoming album there is a song called "Broke Boy", which underlines this victorious story with a thunderous country rock soundtrack.

Only in real life it didn't happen like that. Hardy and his companions ducked out of the bar as soon as the woman discovered her boyfriend. He had enough money to buy her that one drink, but he didn't want her to know he'd been hit.
