Captain Beefheart: Beefheart - Through the Eyes of Magic

Hartcover - English - 864 pages
With original autograph of John 'Drumbo' French

Few names carry such formidable mystique and rabid cult status as Captain Beefheart, who led various line-ups of his Magic Band to make the most startling, ground-breaking albums of the twentieth century. In 1982, he retired to concentrate on painting, leaving the mythology he'd stoked himself to grow untamed over the years.

John French is better qualified than anyone to talk about Beefheart. Joining the Magic Band in 1966 at the age of seventeen just before recording their Safe As Milk debut album, he found himself plunged into a tyrannical regime which would dominate his life for the next fourteen years. In addition to drumming, his tasks included translating the mind-blowing avant-garde blues assault of 1969's Trout Mask Replica into readable musical for the Magic Band from the Captain's piano poundings under torturous conditions which John likens to a cult.

French's remarkable memoir starts with a vivid description of the rarely documented carty 60s Lancaster (California) garage-rock scene which also spawned names like Ry Conder and Beefheart's childhood friend and later nemesis Frank Zappa. The latter's numerous appearances in this book will enthral his own legion of fans.
As his spellbinding, often shocking tale unwinds, he encounters a diverse range of characters including Orette Coleman, Jim Morrison and Paul McCartney. John writes with dry, sometimes surreal humour and disarming honesty about his old boss and even himself, bringing in his old Magic Band comrades and other luminaries to jog his memory.

The book is packed with revelations, rare photos and enough anecdotes to keep the Beetheart faithful ruminating for years. French crystallises and brings to life years of legend and speculation. First published in 2010, this must be the ultimate written work on the mercurial genius of Captain Beefheart.
*One of the most incredible stories to emerge out of twentieth century music...the definitive account of life with the Captain from the inside". Kris Needs - Mojo.

John French is a brilliant drummer whose oddball rhythms are both compellingly eccentric and utterty beautiful. And now he's written a devastatingly honest memoir of making music as Drumbo, with the legendary Coptain Beefheart - but it's much more than that. Part confession, part analysis, full of easy conversation and sharp judgments, this is a fine book chronicling the greatest sun-baked Californian experimental rock of the 1960s. Drumbo was at the center of it all, and he remembers everything." Matt Groening.

"Buen for those who aren't that lamiliar with Captain Beetheart and His Magic Band, this is an amazing read. For those who are familiar, il's the detailed story of this mysterious lot you've been waiting to hear, told by someone who was an integral part of it, Drumbo himself, John French." Billy Bob Thornton

John French's memory recall is extraordinary. Add to this, intenviews with many ex-Magic Band members and associates, and you have a remarkable book, a treasure trove lor lans of Beetheart and his music, full of lascinating insights and startling minutiae. Not only that, it is well written with no holds barred, cutting through the layers of myth that have attached themselues to the Beetheart legend over the years although this sometimes makes (or uncomfortable reading .. but if you want the inside story of how some of the most original and challenging music in rock was created by someone who helped create it, then this book is essential." Steve Froy.

"Captain Beefheart"

John French was born in the San Bernardino area of Souther California but grew up in the Moiave Desert town of Lancaster - hometown of Frank Zappa and Don Van Viet. He played in local bands including Merrell & the Exiles and Blues In A Bottle, before joining Captain Beefheart's Magic Band in late 1966, where he developed one of music's most recognisable and influential drumming styles which is evidenced in the majority of studio albums by the group.

Beetheart gave him the moniker
"Drumbo", which appeared first on Troutmask Replica. He left the outfit in 1980 going on to make albums with Henry Kaiser. In 2000 he compiled and annotated the Grow Fins anthology and then in 2003 reformed the Magic Band with some of its earlier members. They toured and released a few albums until John's retirement at the end of 2017. In 2008, he recorded an album of self-penned music under the name of Drumbo with four former Magic Band members. He lives with his wife in Lancaster, California.
