Various Artists, Great Guitars at Sun (Bear Family). There were great piano players at Sun (Jerry Lee Lewis and Charlie Rich), and good performers on several instruments, but guitars are what first come to mind when you think of the Sun sound.

As Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Roy Orbison were defining rock ’n’ roll’s first wave at Memphis’s Sun Studios in the 1950s, a group of shadow-figure drummers led by J.M. As Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Roy Orbison were defining rock ’n’ Take note, it takes more than a great vocalist to make a great song. Great Guitars at Sun features tracks by such luminaries as Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Howlin' Wolf, Dick Penner and many others. As you may have surmised the guitar is the focus this time and as such this is quite the rocking album.

compilation putting the ckbe t in the front sPat. There's a famous newsreel clip of a 1950s Southern hellfire preacher - Hank Snow's son, as it happens - denouncing rock'n'roll, claiming that what sent the kids over the edge was "the beat! the beat! the beat!". This fine collection shines the spotlight squarely on the people delivering that beat, none more so than the magnificent Jimmy Van Eaton, who drummed on 173 of the 330 songs issued during his time at Sun. He's on 14 of the 28 here, from Billy Riley's Red Hot to Jerry Lee's Whole Lotta Shakin' and Charlie Rich's
