Die American Breed gründeten 1966 in Chicago - Gary Loizzo, Gesang und Gitarre (geb. 16. August 1945); Chuck Colbert, Bass (29. August 1944); Al Ciner, Gitarre (14. Mai 1947) und Lee Graziano, Schlagzeug (9. November 1943) - und hatten in den Jahren 1967-8 fünf Chartplatten, die alle von Bill Traut von Dunwich Productions produziert wurden. Ursprünglich Gary and the Nite Lights genannt, hatte die Gruppe einen seelenbetonten Sound, der am besten in ihrem größten Hit Bend Me, Shape Me" (Acta) präsentiert wurde, der 1967 in Amerika die Nummer 5 erreichte. Weitere Hits waren ihr erster, "Step Out Of Your Mind" (Nr. 24) und "Green Light" (Nr. 39 im Jahr 1968). Nach mehreren personellen Veränderungen entwickelte sich die Gruppe zu Rufus.
