CURTIS LEE
Pure Love
Doing his best Rick Nelson imitation, Yuma's Curtis Lee really does a great job on the Johnny Burnette song, Pure Love. And that makes sense as Burnette also wrote lots of songs for Nelson around this time. Lee was born in Yuma on October 28, 1941, and by high school he was singing locally. In 1959, he left for the West Coast. There he recorded for the small labels Hot, Warrior and Sabra before signing in 1960 with the New York-based Dunes Records. Singer Ray Peterson discovered him.
Peterson and manager Stan Shulman had just started their new label and they wanted Lee as their first signing. After two lackluster releases, they asked Phil Spector to produce the next record. He took the simple Pretty Little Angle Eyes, written by Lee and Tommy Boyce, added The Halos as a backing group, and delivered a Top 10 hit. Spector also produced the follow-up, Under The Moon Of Love, but it just cracked the Top 50 and before long the Dunes-Spector collaboration was over. Lee continued to record for Dunes until the end of 1963. After leaving Dunes, Lee made the occasional record through the end of the decade. Once back in Yuma he had, and continues to have, a very successful career in his hometown as a custom homebuilder.
