In seiner Heimat, den USA, wurde er Ende 1979 erst anerkannt, nachdem er in England riesige Erfolge hatte und von der CMA (Great Britain) zum besten internationalen Country Sänger gewählt worden war. Boxcar Willie fühlt sich vor allem der Musik von Jimmie Rodgers und Hank Williams verpflichtet und pflegt das Hobo-Image. Mit Vorliebe singt er Songs aus dem Train- und Hobo-Genre.
