Who was/is Sam Wooding ? - CDs, Vinyl LPs, DVD and more
Sam Wooding
* June 17th 1895 - August 1st 1985
Sam Wooding taught himself how to play the piano so well as an autodidact that he can already earn his living as a professional pianist at the age of 17. In 1923 Wooding gathered an orchestra around him, with whom he performed at the famous Alabama Club in New York City's 44th Street, next to Broadway. In 1924/25 Sam Wooding, together with his Chocolate-Kiddies-Orchestra (put together for an American revue), introduces Dixieland as well as orchestral jazz to Europe. The orchestra is always on the move. In 1931 Wooding's combo breaks apart during a tour of Belgium, and in 1932 the American Wooding returns to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he came from. The recordings of the Sam Wooding Orchestra are rare collector's items today. One of these is the "Black Bottom" recorded in Berlin in 1926.
