Fredrik Vahle

"Fredrik Vahle - The good conscience of the nursery rhyme." ('Giessener Anzeiger')

Fredrik Vahle, born in 1942 in Stendal, wrote the first children's song to the tune Von den Blauen Bergen kommen wir. Then he heard Süverkrüp's digger driver Willibald. And when around the same time pläne announced a children's song competition, Vahle was one of those - especially from the folk scene - who now began to make children's songs. He was also influenced by foreign models like Woody Guthrie or Pete Seeger. "A progressive movement that opposes domination and manipulation is trying to present its thoughts in all sorts of ways," Fredrik Vahle said in a 1981 interview with Folk Magazine. "And so, according to the children's literature, she also changed the children's song. We have noticed that there is a need among children for songs that deal with their own problems." The song Die Rübe goes back to experiences Vahle had made with his then partner Christiane Knauf in a secondary school in Hesse. It demonstrates by way of example how joint action by children of different social and national origins can be successful. Songs should be "fun, they should promote the joy of recognizing and seeing through the environment. In a way that is comprehensible to the children, they should describe social facts and arouse interest in acting in solidarity." This is how Christiane Knauf and Fredrik Vahle described their understanding of children's songs on the cover of their 1973 LP 'Die Rübe'.

The studied Germanist and political scientist took up socio-political topics like environmental protection, integration of foreigners, peace movement etc. again and again in the following years in his children's songs. This includes the piece Der Friedensmaler from his 1983 LP of the same name, which features "funny and thoughtful songs about fear and encouragement for small and large (!) people".

Recently, Fredrik Vahle has mainly been working on "new movement songs", i.e. songs that "make one want to move and move, but also take impulses from other movement cultures and new movement teachings (including Tai Ji and QuiGong as well as Feldenkrais)". At the same time he offers training workshops for adults in which he demonstrates the practical pedagogical work with the songs and combines them with reflections on the theme of 'language and movement'.
