Los Locos Del Ritmo

Los Locos Del Ritmo was one of Mexico’s leading rock and roll groups. The band had been founded in México City in late 1957 under the name of Pepe Y Sus Locos Del Ritmo by pianist José ‘Pepe’ Negrete. The group’s first big step was winning a band contest organized by Telesistema Mexicano on Channel 2, México City, in 1958. They won a trip to the United States that included a live appearance in New York on ‘Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour’ television show in which they reached second place. Appearances on several radio shows all over Mexico gained them more popularity, and they changed their name to Los Locos Del Ritmo. Along with a tremendous singles output, the band also recorded a huge number of albums. Their Spanish-sung version of Freddy Cannon’s ’59 smash Tallahassee Lassie appeared on their second LP ‘Locos Del Ritmo,’ released in 1960. The band had several lineup changes after the death of their lead singer Toño De La Villa in 1962..
