Ab 1940 zog er mit seiner eigenen Band durch Theater und Clubs. 1936 machte er seine ersten Schallplatten und hatte zwischen 1943 und 1946 zahlreiche No. 1 Hits. Sein bekanntester Song wurde „Pistol Packin'Mama“.
