Ben Berlin

Born as Hermann Byk (or Bick) in Estonia, the pianist graduated from the State Academy of Music in St. Petersburg before moving to the city after which he takes his name. Ben Berlin committed himself to classical piano accompaniment in the German capital, but then with his own twelve-man band of jazz-influenced dance music and finally with an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon. Many of the Ben Berlin recordings are exported abroad on the Polydor label, including Ben Berlin's interpretation of "Wings" (1926). Ben Berlin, who is of Jewish descent, did not return to Germany from a tour of Switzerland at the beginning of 1933. He emigrates via England to the USA.
