Who was/is George Young ? - CDs, Vinyl LPs, DVD and more
George Young knew Elvis and there’s a photo of them jamming to prove it, with Young on electric guitar and Presley seated at the piano. The young Detroiter made a handful of one-offs. The mid-tempo Wow! Wow! Wow! (Wish You’d Belong To Me) for the tiny Chord label and a pulverizing two-sider, Shakin’ Shelley b/w Buggin’ Baby on Jack and Devora Brown’s Motor City-based Fortune logo, hit the streets in 1957. They were followed the next year by Young’s solitary Mercury outing, the hand-clapping grinder Can’t Stop It, penned like its predecessors by Young and Jerry Graller (ditto its flip, Come Back To Me). George resurfaced with his band, The Youngsters, on the Pacesetter logo with a 1964 revival of Larry Williams’ Bony Moronie and again in ’67 with a fresh Johnny B. Goode arranged by guitarist Dennis Coffey (its flip, Mechanic From Hamtramck, underscored his Michigan roots).
