In the early 1960s, the English music scene was in transition. Trad jazz still held sway over a large segment of music enthusiasts and nascent British rockers like Cliff Richard and Tommy Steele were on the upswing, albeit with a largely tame style. But in the underground, an enthusiastic cult rabidly pursued American blues and R&B. Passing imported records around like sacred scrolls, these blues acolytes absorbed everything thing they could about this exotic music from a far-off land. Before long, these students graduated from listening to actually playing the blues, tentatively at first, but gaining confidence daily. As groups began to form, a competition of sorts ensued, wherein the participants battled to be the best at replicating the wild, howling sounds from across Atlantic. Of all the young blues combos, the best and the absolute wildest was the Yardbirds.

Too often, the Yardbirds are merely pigeonholed as the 'guitar hero farm team' that introduced Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page to the rock world. This outlook unfairly underplays their outrageous talents as a live band. For those not fortunate enough to have seen the band live in their formative years, Live! Blueswailin' July '64 is cause for celebration! Sourced from a tape that surfaced in 2003, these tracks capture the band in their second incarnation, with Eric Clapton on lead guitar. Clapton's reputation was just starting to build among guitar enthusiasts and this tape provides a rare sample of his formative years. Particularly on the closing number, 'The Sky Is Crying,' Clapton gives ample evidence of the skills that would soon earn him nicknames like 'God,' 'Slowhand' and, er, 'Derek.'

But this isn't just 'the Clapton show.' Indeed, the entire band is on fire here, wailing in full 'rave-up' mode! You can feel the excitement as the group takes ownership of blues classics like 'Smokestack Lightning' and transforms them into something truly unique, something uniquely Yardbirds. The sound quality is astonishing, clearly eclipsing all previous live releases of the band, slim as that library was. It is a true 'fly on the wall' listening experience, with the visceral flow of a band at their prime on full display. Das goldene Triumvirat aus Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck und Jimmy Page bedeutete, dass die Yardbirds nacheinander drei der größten britischen Blues-Rock-Gitarristen aller Zeiten in ihren Reihen hatten. Der Bluesharp spielende Sänger Keith Relf konnte sich auch hören lassen, zum Beispiel auf knallhart aufgemotzten Neuinterpretationen von I'm A Man oder The Train Kept A-Rollin'. Während der Clapton-Ära war hochenergetischer Blues die Hauptleidenschaft des rockenden Quintetts. Relf (am 22. März 1943 in Richmond, England, geboren), Rhythmusgitarrist Chris Dreja, Bassist Paul Samwell-Smith und Drummer Jim McCarty stellten mit dem 16-jährigen Leadgitarristen Anthony 'Top' Topham die Originalbesetzung der Yardbirds, die sich nach der Jazz-Saxofonlegende Charlie Parker benannten.

Als Topham im September 1963 die Kunsthochschule der Band vorzog, kontaktierte Relf den am 30. März 1945 in Ripley geborenen Clapton, der kurz zuvor für die Roosters und bei Casey Jones and the Engineers gespielt hatte. Schon einen Monat später trat er mit den Yardbirds auf. Nachdem sie sich einen Manager, Giorgio Gomelsky, zugelegt hatten, spielten die Yardbirds hinter dem tourenden amerikanischen Bluesmann Sonny Boy Williamson. Dann unterschrieben sie bei der englischen Columbia und spielten Versionen von John Lee Hookers Boom Boom und Billy Boy Arnolds I Wish You Would für Singleveröffentlichungen ein. Boom Boom erschien allerdings nur in den Niederlanden und Deutschland auf CBS (1964).

Ihre glühend heiße Debüt-LP 'Five Live Yardbirds', im Frühjahr 1964 im Londoner Marquee Club aufgenommen, dokumentierte ihre Vorliebe für beschleunigtes Tempo sowie Claptons donnernde Gitarrenlicks auf einer Reihe von Blues-Covertiteln. Ein Studio-Revival von Good Morning Little Schoolgirl brachte der Gruppe Ende 1964 ihre erste U.K.-Chartplatzierung ein. Ihre stampfende Bearbeitung einer 1955er Vee-Jay-Aufnahme des Chicagoer Bluesharpspielers Billy Boy Arnold, I Ain't Got You (geschrieben vom Vee-Jay A&R-Mann Calvin Carter und von den 'Birds am 19. September 1964 in den Olympic Sound Studios in London eingespielt), war trotz eines atemberaubenden Solos von Clapton nicht so erfolgreich. Wenn Relf über seinen 'charge account at Goldblatt's' sang, dann verstanden wahrscheinlich nur wenige britische Fans den Bezug zu einer Warenhauskette in Chicago. 'Es war das größte Kompliment, das man mir machen konnte, wenn jemand mein Material spielen wollte', sagt Billy. 'Ich hatte nicht das Gefühl, dass sie meine Sachen gestohlen hatten. Ich fand, dass sie es genügend schätzten, um es aufzunehmen, und das gefiel mir an ihnen. Ich war stolz darauf.' Drei Monate bevor Carter Arnold den Song gab, hatte sein Labelkollege Jimmy Reed schon einen damals zunächst nicht veröffentlichten Versuch damit unternommen.

'Sie mochten die Art nicht, wie Jimmy Reed es brachte', sagt Billy. 'Sie wollten es rock 'n' rolliger.' Die Yardbirds bogen mit For Your Love, ihrem 65er-Durchbruch auf beiden Seiten des Atlantiks, in eine poppigere Richtung ab und ergänzten ihren Sound um Brian Augers Cembalo (der das Instrument zuvor noch nie gespielt hatte). 'Ich lief gerade in Richtung Oxford Circus und dachte mir: 'Diese Typen sind verrückt. Welcher normale Mensch kauft schon eine Pop-Single, auf der ein Cembalo zu hören ist?'', lacht Auger. 'Aber damit lag ich ganz schön falsch!' Diese stilistische Verschiebung gefiel Clapton überhaupt nicht, er stieg aus. Als Ersatz wurde Jeff Beck rekrutiert, und die Yardbirds erweiterten ihren musikalischen Horizont mit ihren 1965 - 66er-Hits Heart Full Of Soul, Evil Hearted You, Shapes Of Things und Over Under Sideways Down. Als Beck ging, nahm Jimmy Page seinen Platz ein, bis sich die Yardbirds 1968 auflösten- danach gründete Page Led Zeppelin. Relf wurde am 14. Mai 1976 durch einen Stromschlag getötet, als er auf einer nicht geerdeten Elektrogitarre spielte.
