Who was/is The Voxpoppers ? - CDs, Vinyl LPs, DVD and more

Hailing from Brooklyn, The Voxpoppers centered around brothers Freddie, Sal, and Harry Tambura. The self-contained unit numbered five or six members in all, and one of them played accordion if the promo photo on the cover of their rare Mercury EP was accurate. Wishing For Your Love, their doowop-drenched debut ballad, originally came out on Bill Lasley’s Amp 3 label in February of 1958 before Mercury picked it up nationally. The track sailed to #18 on ‘Billboard’s’ pop ‘Jockey’ list that spring with a strutting The Last Drag sporting some hot guitar on its flip.

Before Mercury could prepare an encore, the Poplar label issued The Voxpoppers’ Danny Small-penned A Love To Last A Lifetime (Freddie Tambura wrote the flip, Come Back Little Girl). Mercury answered later that spring with a coupling of Ping Pong Baby and Pony Tail, two rockers supplied by New York songscribe Jack Hammer. Singles for Versailles (1959’s Can’t Understand It) and Warwick (Lonely For You as Freddie and The Voxpoppers in ‘60) rounded out the band’s slim catalog.
