The Videos

Trickle, Trickle

Some groups came and went in the blink of an eye. The Videos hailed from the Queens borough of New York City and weren't around long enough to accrue much biographical info; Ronald Cussey (or Cuffey) was their lead singer, abetted by first tenor Clarence Bassett, Jr. (formerly of The Five Sharps), second tenor Charles Baskerville, baritone Johnny Jackson, and bass Ron Woodhall (or maybe Woodhall was their lead and Cussey sang second tenor; sources differ).

The Videos were formed in 1957. A second place victory at the Apollo's weekly amateur competition (where they sang The Orioles' At Night) put them in touch with Philly deejay Douglas 'Jocko' Henderson, who helped get the group a contract with Philadelphia's Casino Records. Jocko shared writer's credit with the entire group on their '58 Casino debut, the storming rocker Trickle, Trickle, but today BMI credits the song to Bassett only. With the lovely ballad Moonglow You Know its B-side (sporting the same Videos/Henderson writers' credit on the label), Trickle, Trickle made plenty of noise on the East Coast without breaking nationally.

The Videos encored on Gone-distributed Casino with the ballad Love Or Infatuation, a Bassett-penned effort, b/w Shoo-Be-Doo-Be Cha Cha Cha, but that would do it for the quintet; Cussey and Woodhall both reportedly died before they could record again. Bassett and Baskerville rebounded by joining ex-Heartbeats lead tenor James Sheppard's Shep and The Limelites and scoring a #2 pop smash in 1961 with Daddy's Home. Trickle, Trickle had an afterlife, rising to the lower reaches of the pop charts in 1980 in a version by the Manhattan Transfer.
