Various: The Roots Of Psychobilly (2-LP)

(Not Now Music) 32 tracks

Psychobilly arrived on the British music scene in the Eighties and has accu-rately been described as a rowdy, speed-crazed take on a variety of Ameri-can musical styles. Combining elements of rockabilly, glam, punk, surf, heavy rock, garage and country, it remains a major cult that operates without the assistance of the mainstream media. Yet this scarcely bothers the bands, fans, record labels, promoters, fanzines and web-sites for whom it remains an obsession.

The street-level scene has developed from its earliest days in the UK and Europe to flourish in America, Australia, Japan, and else-where. A huge number of bands from across the globe have made their own unique contribution to the genre over the past three decades, standing alongside outfits such as the Meteors, Demented Are Go and King Kurt who kicked it off in the UK. For followers, the lifestyle involves music, fashion, tattoos, haircuts and more. Yet while this results in a visually and aurally distinctive product, psychobilly's unusu-ally inclusive attitude has attracted a huge variety of followers. While membership of youth and music-based cults over the years, from mods and rockers through to punks, has always been exclusive, psychobilly has emerged from a mix of music genres and has thus been embraced by many.

Musically speaking, its deepest roots are in rockabilly - the likes of Sun Records' `Million Dollar Quartet' of Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley are rightly revered. But these legends are just the beginning. Rockabilly had a large number of lesser-known artists whose morbidly fascinating music would later feed the psychobilly genre.

These 'dark songs from the backwoods' were too controversial and sinister for radio play in the Fifties but proved meat and drink to the bands who rediscovered them - three decades later. Sometimes they offered opportunities for cover versions (such."" - as King Kurt's 'Ghost Riders In the Sky'), other times inspiration for new composi-tions in a similar ghoulish vein.' A track that displays the darker and more menacing side of psychobilly is 'Jungle Fever', recorded by the Playboys in 1959. The instrumental track, barely a minute long with its unmistakable bassline, fits the psychobilly style perfectly.

Similarly, 'Werewolf', another instrumental recorded by Seattle's Frantics, has not only been adopted by psychobillies but also features on a raft of themed Halloween compila-tions. Recording engineer Kearney Francis supplied the snarls and growls. Instru-mental kings the Ventures covered this track, re-titling it 'The Fourth Dimension' to add space-age credibility but losing its vicious appeal. Psychobilly is just as much about themes as it is musical style. 'Jungle' and 'Were-wolf' made it into the lexicon, as did 'Sinner' - hence the popularity of Freddie and the Hitch-Hikers' 1961 song of the same name. Another menacing track, it chimes with fans and artists' fascination with some of the darker aspects of humanity. Like-wise, the switchblade is an example of psychobilly iconography, exemplified by Min-nesota blues guitarist Ron Thompson's rowdy instrumental of that name.

Jackie Morningstar's 'Rockin' In The Graveyard' also has a role to play in showing the development of psychobilly. Mentions of ghosts and ghouls like the purple peo-ple eater and the infamous witchdoctor, along with the trademark rockabilly beat, sends a track that was understandably controversial in the Fifties straight into the library that modern-day psychobillies call on for inspiration. We have rounded up thirty two originals here that exemplify the reservoir of atti-tude into which modern-day psychobillies have tapped. The likes of Shawnee In-dian guitarist Link Wray, New Orleans' own Mac Rebennack, alias Dr John, and future surf-guitar king Dick Dale are three of the most famous names on show, but there are plenty of fascinating stories to be told by others. Guns, ghosts, graveyards - all the ingredients are here, mixed and delivered by a variety of unlikely-sounding artists, most of whom are now lost to the annals of history.
