Various: The Played The Hackney Empire (CD)

(The Empress Recording) 20 tracks, original recordings

The Hackney Empire, designed by Frank Matham, opened in 1901. After being used for T.V. programmes and bingo it is now once again a "live" theatre, thanks to the Friends of the Hackney Empire. On this CD are many favourite artists who trod the boards of this historic theatre during the thirties and forties. Now on with the show. Leon Cortez & His Coster Pals provide the opening offering with Doreen Harris (one of only three living ladies on this CD ) which is definitely a "Summer Sweetheart".

Tessie O'Shea then brings her banjolele on the scene for some musical merriment, and is followed by a medley mix from Joe Loss. Abdication year and The Two Leslies (Sarony & Holmes) supplied sauce while Kitty Masters courtesy of Michael Hodges (sometime songwriting name of Max Wall) sings sweetly "He's An Angel". Nat Gonella (the only gentleman from Hackney's heydays vocalising into these television times) has a 'river round-up', and the halfway point is reached when Sandy Powell completely "Furnishes A House". Max Miller wowing war workers with Churchilliana ("The Grand Old Man") and comical chat from a 1941 concert, after which comes a song composed by a classic comedy double act (Max & Harry Nesbitt) and performed by a bandleader renowned for his own comedy classics, Harry Roy.

A homegrown humdinger from Sid Millward & His Nitwits is "I'm Looking For The Sheik Of Araby" while Murgatroyd & Winterbottom (Ronald Frankau & Tommy Handley) give the same British bounce to "Good Morning" - original of this one comes from Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown.

"The Lonesome Trail Ain't Lonesome Anymore" could only mean the foremost `Country Music' man of the thirties, namely Big Bill Campbell. Gert & Daisy (Elsie & Doris Waters) justify all of their almost seven minute section, with a very rare complete version of"London Pride" musical monologue - not written by Noel Coward! Max Wall recorded "Button Up Your Shoes And Dance" in 1940 (according to Michael Pointon, already at work on the first biography of this legendary laughter maker) whereas Suzette Tarri had written (with her husband) and waxed her "My ALf" three years before. Dorothy Carless (now resident in the USA as is Tessie) summons up a "Stormy Weather" finish, before a "Coming Shortly announcement for her erstwhile employer.
