(PRECISION GB) 17 great tracks, Chess Masters

This album presents a diverse selection of tracks record-ed in New Orleans from the Chess catalog, including several of the company's bigger hits. Many independent R&B cornpanies found all kinds of interestIng and/or com-mercial artists in New Orleans during the 50.s. Fora variety of reasons, Chess neuer found anybody with the lasting irn-pact of Fats Domino or Little Richard (who cut most of his original hits in the Crescent City, using many of the same musicians heard herein) but several of the Chess New Orleans recordings were among the best of their time. Most of the sessions were produced by pianist/bandleader Paul Gayten at the famous Cosimo studio, a tiny room in the back of an appliance store. The combination of primitive facilities and the great local session rnseslcians, men like Huey "Piano" Smith, guitarists Edgar Blanchard and Ernest McLean, saxophonists Lee Allen and Davis Lastie, and drummers Ead Palmer and Charles Williams, produc-ed a steady stream of first rate R&B, unencumbered by studio production frippery. Huey Smith and his Clowns provide the backing an Myles & Dupont's "Loud Mouth Annie"/"Heaven Or Heart-break". Smith himself leads off "Loud Mouth Annie" and takes a typically rolling piano solo. Edgar "Big Boy" Myles had previously worked with Sugarboy Crawford In the legendary Sha-Wee4 he also played trombone an Sugar-boy's solo sessions and went an to cut a Aw solo sides for Specialty Records. Auguste "Dimes" Dupont later rejoined Myles in the Gondoliers with guitarist Edgar Blanchard. Blanchard himself played an more sessions than he can remernber but his only solo releases were a couple of in-strumental singles.

The previously unissued "Lawdy Mama", cut In 1957, shows that what he lacked in vocal finesse he more than made up in raw power. The great drurnrner Charles "Hungry" Williams worked and recorded with staunch rockers such as Fats Domino, Little Richard, Huey Smith, Art Neville, and Jerry Byrne, as well as pop acts Ilke Jimmy Clanton and Frankie Ford. "A lot of people aren't hip to hie contribution", says gultarist/singer Earl King. "He could play more stuff clown-ing around than most drummers could when they were con-centrating. He just had a natural talent and he'd do all kinds of great riffs because nobody euer told bim he wasn't supposed to do them." On "I Cried All The Way Home" and "Ft hythmatic Rhythm" (the latter written by Jack Hammer who also wrote "Great Balls Of Fire") Hungry puts aside the drums to show that he could bring home the bacon as a singer, aided once again by Huey Smith and the rest of his superb band.

The Hacketts, a nine-piece band led by pianst Art Neville, were one of the most popular local groups during the mid 50's, but surprisingly they only entered the studio once in 1954 to cut the two-sided classic "Mardi Gras Mambo"/"Your Time's Up". Neville went an to cut for Specialty as a solo and was a Charter member of the legen-dary Meters. Sugar Boy Crawford's classic "Jockomo" was inspired by the rhythrn and chants of the Mardi Gras Inidan tribes, in-formal social Clubs who spent the entire year preparing *heir costumes for Mardi Gras Day when they would parade through the streets dancing, singing, and performing the second line. "Jockomo" was later redone by the Dixie Cups as "Iko lko" and they had a huge hit with it, but Sugar Boy did not get any composer's royalties because the song had not been properly copyrighted when it was first recorded back in 1954.
