The Deep South is where American music and politics goes crazy. New York may have modern art and jazz, Los Angeles may have Hollywood and surfing, Kansas has wheat ... but the land below the Mason-Dixie Line is where things get — in the immortal words of the Hillbilly Cat (one E Presley) - "real, real gone". Historians and sociologists have expended much thought on why a land scarred by slavery, the Civil War and its brutal segregationist aftermath should produce music that is, in turn, uplifting and joyous, full of anger and misery and, finally, a celebration of the divine without producing a definite answer. Well, I'll give you one: the human spirit. Refusing to be vanquished, the spirit of the ordinary people across the South rose to express itself in the only way it could — by song and dance. And amongst all the blood and sweat and tears expended there was always music. Music to drink and dance to on a Saturday night. Music to sing in the fields as you worked beneath a brutal sun. Music to sing on the porch to your loved ones as the night crept in. Music to sing in church that raised spirits on Sunday.
 -
Music with origins in West Africa and music with origins in Ireland, Scotland and England. Music with origins in the Breton music of France and music with origins in Native American chants and dances. Music with origins in the Spanish/Mexican communities of Texas and music with origins in the Eastern European diasporas: Polish polkas, Jewish klezmer, Russian ballads and the region's Romany Gypsies. Music that had begun taking brilliant shape in Cuba and Puerto Rico, Haiti and Hawaii and would, in the US, beautifully bloom so to illuminate the nation's music making.
  -
It's a cliché to say the US is a "melting pot" but, when it comes to music making, there is a certain truth in such a term: while laws may have been enacted to ensure that blacks and Mexicans did not share with whites the same schools, jobs, hospitals or houses there was no way that the music could not be shared. Blues and jazz took shape in extremely poor black communities yet almost immediately they found their white neighbours wanting to dance and sing these savage new sounds. While country music reflected the values and traditions of rural, white communities it also displayed, right from its initial recordings (The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers) blues stylings and lyrics: segregation could not stop African American flavours helping shape country music's best songs. And in return, country music became hugely popular amongst rural black American communities.
 -
Which is to say the US South is one big swamp where everything bubbles away, occasionally erupting to take brilliant, shiny shape in front of the nation. Swampabilly Madness aims to demonstrate how forms that might seem totally disparate took shape in those sweltering Southern communities and helped shape what we now call "popular music". Whether it's a London diva like Amy Winehouse singing in a style indebted to black American rhythm and blues vocalists or Manu Chao playing crunchy, Latin-flavoured rock'n'roll or The Black Keys serving up swaggering, New Orleans-infected rock or Tinariwen letting their desert guitars sing of ancient blues flavours or Jamaican vocalists demonstrating a love of both country and soul music, musicians' everywhere owe a debt to that humid Southern swamp where the most exciting music ever made arose from.

superb compilation - nice price!
